I have installed professionally for over 8 years. I've heard more than my fair share from Pioneer, Sony, JVC, Alpine, Eclipse and Kenwood. Pioneer has always been at the top of the list with headunits. I've installed, literally, thousands of headunits in various applications. For whatever reason, Pioneer's headunits have a much better sound to them. I've had customers change their mind on a headunit purchase after I did an installation and I've removed one brand and inserted a different brand. So I've heard various models from various brands back-to-back using the exact same speakers/acoustical environment. Nothing beats that Pioneer sound. It's just a much more "real" and "true to life" sound that I don't get with many other brand names. I really wish I could share that back-to-back experience with everyone reading this. It's night and day.
But onto this particular headunit. It's a solid offering from Pioneer that gives the user a TON of higher-end features for well under $200. Bluetooth built-in and USB input in the rear. Let me commend Pioneer for sticking with the rear USB input. MANY other manufacturers are putting them in the front. But I'd much rather run the USB cable from the rear to my glove box. Here I can plug in my iPod or flash drive and navigate through the tracks via the Pioneer display. Now my expensive electronics are out of sight from thieves. Also, no ugly cords hanging from the faceplate during listening. Sexy and sleek install. If you're familiar with Pioneer's menu structure, then you'll pick this right up. It's pretty much all the same stuff we've seen from Pioneer over the years. The display is decent, though I was hoping for better. I was hoping I wouldn't be able to see any dots in their LCD display. Hoping it would blend a touch better. But don't get me wrong. It's really probably equal with any other dot-matrix display on the market. Still looks great.
At that price point, it's tough to complain about anything. But I do have a couple gripes. First, the small toggle switch surrounding the volume knob. It's something Pioneer is trying out for the first time, and I'm not fond of it. You push the toggle down to go backwards and up to go forwards. A simple forward and back button would have done just as well ,and I personally feel, would have been easier to manipulate. Plus I can foresee debris getting behind the toggle and then slowly grinding away on the faceplate with each press. It just feels cheesy and gimmicky. Next, as an installer, I've seen a million harnesses from Pioneer. But for whatever reason they've chosen to raise the gauge wire used for speaker outputs to something like 26AWG. While I realize not much power is flowing through there, it's simply a sign of degradation in quality. Times are tough, we've all got to save money. But come on guys. How much did switching from ~20awg save you? And at the cost of your harness looking like something from Pyramid or Pyle.
All in all, I'm very happy with this headunit. My gripes are really just me being picky. But yet, this means the headunit is not 5-star perfect in my eyes. Solid headunit I know anyone will be happy with. And that amazing Pioneer sound. In the end, I guess that's all that matters anyway.
