Another Firmware update to this unit, and I think the SD issue is fixed!! I played a 16gb SD card for 6 hours and no reboot issue!!!
The fix is this:
1.2.0014.0300 as of Apr. 10, 2012 from JVC's website (amazon removes the links otherwise I would give it to you).
The NAVIGATION is SUPERB!!! It got me around a 30 minute traffic jam in the DC area. I just took the next exit, and the unit recalculated the route almost instantly. This is really good, and much faster than my Android is at recalculating routes. This update also makes the traffic more accurate.
Side note (I played with the kwnt500hdt, and its the same unit except it has the smaller screen and fewer buttons). The extra money is worth it for the bigger screen and being able to move through songs with a button instead of using the screen.
The DSP let me lower the brightness of my tweeters by letting me lower the gain at around 10k of the speakers, it makes listening to loud music much less harsh. And the crossover curve is graphically displayed.
I hooked up an iphone and the Pandora functionality works just like a radio. It works so well I am really considering switching to an iphone just to enjoy that aspect of it, and Pandora plays through the usb cable, NOT bluetooth which is always better in my book.
NOW I have the radio I wanted!!!
Update
I really do like this unit, but after owning for almost a month, I have found that using the SD card will cause the device to lock up and cause the unit to get stuck with the screen displaying
"Start up error"
My unit shipped with an early version of the software: 1.0.0074.0300
JVC updated the Bios on 3/28/12, to version 1.1.0024.0300 (its available on their website)
I did the update in 5 minutes but even after the update the unit still produced start up error. This one is going back, because I don't have the ability to play music over the SD card. The unit does work without issue via the USB input with a thumb drive. I don't know if I have a damaged unit (everything else works flawlessly) or if its a fault with this unit. I have the NT500HDT on the way, its the same unit, but with a smaller screen. I will post a review on crutchfield as that's where I will be buying that unit.

Good:
- Screen is awesome.
- Every feature you could imagine for a stereo
- Built in HD radio
- GREAT Phone integration
- Traffic is great (news/weather are a nice touch).
- DSP time alignment that really helps!
- You can operate the most used functions with th physical buttons.
- FLAC AND WAV FILES PLAY!!!! Finally high fidelity music in the car without a CD! (this is really the best thing about the unit)
Bad:
- No 4 volt outputs (this is really a nit pick as the 2.5 volt out put is fine)
- JVC/Navteq have had issues updating maps
- Less Android functionality than iPhone.
Initial impressions:
This radio is very intuitive. You can fumble your way through getting it working without the manual. But read the manual as it will keep you from hunting and pecking while driving.
Sound shaping/DSP
The sound of this stereo is surprisingly good! I didn't expect much as I bought it primarily for the traffic/navigation. But this stereo sounds MUCH better than my older pioneer (which had 4volt/crossover/etc). I have a set of Polk mm6501 mounted in the door with tweeters mounted high up. With my old stereo the tweeters were far to bright. After going through the initial setup and selecting 6.5 door speeakers, and toning down the tweeters, the sound became much warmer (which I prefer). I then played with the DSP. This unit gives the option to optimize the speakers up for one person in the front, two people in the front or the entire car. It delays the sound so that speakers are equi-distant from the listener. When I turned this on, it moved the singers voice from the left of the car to the center of the dash. There is also an option to raise or lower the sound stage which is also effective.
There is also active crossovers that actually display the crossover slopes, frequencies and allow you to lower each speakers volume relative to the other. Another great idea to put this beautiful screen to use. There are so many options that you have to be careful that you don't make the sound worse.
Navigation
I installed this myself and placed the GPS antenna under my dash, out of the way of any metal. The GPS signal is strong, and the image of the car was accurate from the initial run. If you read the history of the older JVC Nav units you will find that they are difficult if not impossible to update, but this map/nav information is up to date as of March 24, 2012. It is so up to date, that one of my destinations were relisted under a new county, and that new county was available and accurate.
POI are great. You can find a place by phone number, name, and of course address. Once you select a place you are given options for the fastest/shortest/avoid freeways/avoid tolls(i have to confirm the last one). Shortest really means shortest distance. When I selected this it had me cutting through a dirt road, when the next road ahead was paved. Fastest is the first choice, and it will give you what I would call the easiest route. In other words, when I could have Uturned and saved some time, it guided me to make two right turns. So that can be good or bad. If you are familiar with the area it can slow you down. If you are unfamiliar with the area, then the two right turns would be easier and safer.
Cell Phone Integration
I use an android phone so I don't get all the fancy stuff that iPhone users get, but this unit is still reasonably friendly. Bluetooth connectivity is easy and intuitive, much more so than my older panasonic unit. You tell your phone to become discoverable, the phone showes up on the screen with a number, your phone then displays the same number (so you know its the correct unit), and you select ok. Done. This connects both the phone and the audio blue tooth, which my old radio did not.
Bluetooth, sounds great, the phone sounds great. My only concern was that a few of my calls were slow to dial, but that's probably new device jitters. Once connected, I had no issue. Also the JVC displays the battery level of your phone and the signal strength your phone is getting. Boss!!
Iheart radio and Pandora both play through the unit, and you have can move the tracks forward/pause/play. But you don't get the fancy display on the JVC. I hope they fix this because I see no reason why the android couldn't do this. USB connectivy worked but I will need to play with this a bit more.
Sound quality
I really wasn't expecting much sound quality wise, and with a standard mp3 file there really isn't much to talk about. But with flac files this thing really shines! I compared a flac version and a wav version of the same song, and the flac version is richer, fuller. I hear nuances and instruments that I don't hear in the 320 mp3 version. Playing the flac version of files makes my entire system come alive. I really don't miss the 4 volt inputs as much as I thought I would.
Odd points
- Connected a flip phone to the usb and I was able to view the video, but sound didn't come through.
- Music on the thumbdrive played just fine.
- Music on the SD card did not play, but it could be read (I will trouble shoot).
- Daytime running lights turned the map display to night (I can turn it off, not sure if I will).
- Can't tune in any AM stations. This is a known issue with my car, but I was hoping this unit would overcome that.
- HD Radio sounds great
Final impression:
If this unit had full android integration and if I knew Navteq/JVC would update the maps I would give this unit a 5, as it would then be perfect (I do love this unit so I put the 5 stars from amazon, but its really a 4.5). This is the best unit on the market for $1000 (I purchased it on amazon and the price has fallen again since I bought it). I looked at the older JVC units (no map updates), Kenwood units (slow startup), Alpine (cost more), Panasonic (fewer features), and nothing gives you everything that this unit does at this price. Get it.
